Airwolf lands on HorrorExtra in August
By James Whittington, Monday 1st August 2022
Xtro

Another busy month is lined-up for you on HorrorXtra, including the return flight of a true TV classic, Airwolf!

Here's the lowdown on what August has to offer:

Mutant X continues weekdays at 3pm and chronicles the adventures of a team of human mutants possessing extraordinary powers as a result of genetic engineering. Like hundreds of other unsuspecting subjects, these new mutants were altered in secret experiments conducted in a covert government project. Realising that events have spun out of control, the organisation that created them is urgently hunting them down in an urgent "product recall". Mutant X's mission is to seek out fellow mutants to help them come to terms with their astonishing abilities and protect them from their creators. It may not have invented the helicopter, but Airwolf (weeknights at 7pm from the 3rd) definitely made it much cooler! A renegade helicopter pilot is given the chance to free his imprisoned brother - if he conducts daring missions for a shadowy intelligence agency. One of the best military shows in television history, Airwolf is crammed full of thrilling action and riveting battle scenes. Get ready to take off!

Brutal and powerful drama on the 4th in Abner Pastoll's A Good Woman is Hard to Find. With its finger firmly on the pulses of stark social commentary and shattering suspense, 'Road Games' director Pastoll crafts a dazzling, dark and daring journey through Northern Ireland's criminal underbelly. Recently widowed mother of two Sarah (a tour de force Sarah Bolger) is desperate to know who murdered her husband in front of their young son, rendering him mute. Coerced into helping a low-life drug-dealer stash narcotics stolen from the local Mr. Big, she's forced to go beyond humanity into taking drastic action to protect her children while learning the awful truth about her spouse. Chills of the psychological kind on the 5th where we invite you to meet The Cleaning Lady. A beautiful but lonely women finds companionship with her cleaning lady whose face was disfigured in a childhood accident. But as the relationship develops she discovers the tragic truth behind the scars and becomes embroiled in a horrific act of revenge.

Shed of the Dead on the 11th is a horror comedy with a raft of genre legends on show. Trevor and Graham live very ordinary lives. Except of course when they inhabit their alter egos, Casimir and Sir Brandt, characters from the fantasy war games they play in Graham's basement and Trevor's allotment shed. In those they really are the heroes they imagine themselves to be. So when a neighbour's murderous activities unfortunately coincide with the zombie apocalypse, Graham and Trevor set off on a quest to save the women in their lives, and therein try to live up to the mantle of 'hero'. On the 14th and From the Producers of US and The Purge, comes Bloodline, a violent thriller in the vein of "Dexter". Evan (Seann William Scott) values family above all else, and anyone who gets between him, his wife, and newborn son learns that the hard way. But when it comes to violent tendencies, it seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Tension which will leave you breathless on the 17th, Wired Shut. A disillusioned famous novelist, unable to talk while recovering in his remote mountain home from major reconstructive jaw surgery, is exposed to a life-threatening secret when he receives an unexpected visit from his estranged daughter. A classic form the video nasties age on the 19th, fear from outer space in Xtro. Three years ago young Tony watched with horror as his father was taken into the night sky by a mysterious blinding light and never seen again. Until now. His father is coming home but he's not the man he used to be! A 'must-see' cult rental of the 80s, Xtro is one of the most outrageously bizarre, gory and insanely enjoyable horror films of its time complete with infamous 'alien birth' scene. 'Not all extraterrestrials are friendly'!

A cult classic in the making on the 26th, Odd Thomas. In less than 24 hours, the city of Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. When Odd, a fast food chef with the ability to see the dead and sense impending danger, discovers a dark secret about a stranger in his town, he is compelled to unravel the truth. His soul mate, Stormy, and Police Chief Porter help him on his mission. On the 27th Hammer is back amongst the blood-suckers, Let Me In. A chilling vampire horror from the director of Cloverfield. When a strange young girl, Abby, moves in to the apartment next door, 12 year old Owen is pleased to have found a friend. But as a series of grisly murders take place in their small town, he starts to realise she is not what she seems...

Kim Newman

Respected journalist, film critic, and fiction writer Kim Newman takes us through the celebrated B-movies joining Horror for our Classic Sci-Fi Weekend event running from 16th-17th of April.

The Horror Channel returns to a decade riven with fears of devastating climate change, imminent global war, mutating diseases and general paranoia... albeit in black and white, with miniature effects and make-up masks rather than CGI and the kind of urgency that means world-menacing phenomena can be invoked, allowed to run rampage and then dispelled in well under ninety minutes of crisp, sometimes poetic, sometimes bombastic melodrama.

The times weren't really simpler, and neither were the movies if w...
